Thanks, Mark. You are correct about the question, and I did not recall you saying that either.

David,

Thanks for stopping by. Your synopsis of the various presentations is impressive. If I am tracking you accurately, this is what you are wondering about: "One question: Was it Mark Yarhouse who said that in this case we cannot separate the sin from the sinner. I'm wondering if that wasn't actually Alan Reinarch."

I don't recall making this statement. It is an important insight that Andrew Marin makes in his book, Love in an Orientation, a resource I mentioned at some point during the conference. But his point was to challenge evangelicals in their use of the phrase, "Love the sinner; hate the sin." What I understand Marin to say is that behavior is identity in that evangelicals cannot just make this simple distinction and expect members of the gay community to see that as a reasonable starting point in building a relationship.

In any case, I don't recall making the statement you are asking me about. If I had made it, I would have wanted to say it in the context I just provided above.

Dr. Yarhouse:

I have posted precis of the conference presentations on my blog. There is currently a question regarding something you were said to have said on the post where I have organized links to my summaries: Blogging the Homosexuality Conference

Thanks for visiting, Hilah. I hope you'll come back. I'm glad you enjoyed the workshop. I'd be interested to hear what you are considering for your dissertation topic.

Dr. Yarhouse,

I attended the workshop this morning and it was great! I'm a first-semester Ph.D. Student in Marriage and Family Therapy at Virginia Tech...trying to come up with a topic of interest for my research. I hope you don't mind I looked you up on Regent's website and will probably shoot you an email sometime soon.

Thanks, James. We presented the workshop on mixed orientation couples this morning. It was well attended and people genuinely seemed to appreciate the information and balance between research and practical suggestions. I'll try to post the PowerPoint either here or at the SIT Framework site.

I've been reading through "Family Therapies" piecemeal. There is a lot of good information that I have not been exposed to before.

Good luck in Nashville! I wish I could be there to see your presentation!

I interpreteted this section as a systematic downplaying of any results indicating positive outcomes related to shifts in sexual orientation. If change occurs in the "wild", as is suspected, that might indicate that there is all sorts of negative affect associated with sexual fluidity.

Less change reported in true experimental design would be expected if there were increased controls for social desirability. There are serious problems with demand characteristics in the groups under scrutiny. If you think of narcisissm and impression management as a possible source of problems in the therapeutic alliance, just imagine what it does to uncontrolled responding in surveys. This is one situation where the structured interview fails. Increasing controls and boosting a feeling of anonymity in participants would reduce some of the differences observed in the non-experimental designs.
